Spencer Perceval

Spencer Perceval was elected as the Tory Member of Parliament for Northampton on 9th May 1796.

 

He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the House of Commons before becoming Prime Minister on 4th October 1809.

 

Spencer Perceval died on 11th May 1812 when he was shot dead in the lobby of the House of Commons by John Bellingham, a merchant who had incurred business debts.

 

Perceval became the only British Prime Minister to have been assassinated.

 

His body rested in No. 10 Downing Street for five days before burial.
