In from the cold in Northampton

Northampton Borough Council’s Gateway outreach teams, including its Street Rescue Service and Street Outreach Response teams, help homeless men and women into emergency bed spaces provided by the Council and NAASH when temperatures drop below zero on three consecutive nights.

The extra accommodation is part of the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol which is triggered during extended spells of cold weather and which is intended to ensure that no one’s health is threatened on the street because of the icy conditions.

Councillor Mary Markham, Cabinet member for housing said: "These teams work in all weather conditions, often through to 2am in the morning while the rest of Northampton sleeps – they really are some of Northampton’s most unsung heroes.

"Not only does Northampton Borough Council’s Gateway team help scores of people off the streets during cold weather, every effort is made to engage with individuals to ensure they do not return to the streets when warmer weather returns.”

Members of the public can help the outreach teams by calling the new national StreetLink number 0300 500 0914 to report sightings of people sleeping rough.
